March/Apr 2001 Site of the
Month: |

When I first started working on this site, I spent many hours cruising the
internet looking for useful information. I wasn't looking particularly for fish
information, what I was really looking for were nice sites that had added to the hobby.
My intent was to create a site of my own that would emulate the best traits of
other sites. While I was looking around, I bumped into Rainbow Fish on-line.
This site is a Rainbowfish lover's dream. Unfortunately, I thought I had been
dreaming as I went looking for the site again, but could not find it. Rainbowfish
online had moved servers and gained more information, and that is again available as what
I believe to be perhaps the best aquatic site on the internet. |

Original Content (10) |
|
Rainbowfish is written much like
an in-depth college report. There is so much good information,
you'll find yourself wishing you could purchase it all in book format. I'm certain that if it
was available as a book, the 200+pages would sell amazingly well. Every aspect of
Rainbowfish are covered on the site in great depth. Care is taken to cover the
origins of the fish, how to keep and breed the fish, how to raise the young, and of course
a nearly limitless amount of information on nearly every species of Rainbowfish. In
addition, there is information on common gobies and gudgeons in the area as well as an
unparalleled section on feeding fish in general. (though it is intended only to
cover Rainbowfish) That section includes information on raising every type of live
food you can imagine in addition to providing information on making your own fish food.
No detail about Rainbowfish and their surroundings have been left out of this site.
The content is singular to the site and of utmost quality.

Value to the Hobby (10) |
|
My
intent in creating my own site was to add value to the hobby. I
feel I have done so, but I would not have even begun a site if every
category of fish had a site like the Rainbowfish site attached to it. Whether you
are new or old to the hobby, you will learn massive amounts of information at this site.
In fact, if you had no knowledge whatsoever of Rainbowfish, I am confident that you
could spend a day at the site, and it would take at least a day to read it all, and that
after your day at the site, you would be one of the most knowledgeable people in your
state in regards to Rainbowfish. |

Design (Visuals/Navigation) (10) |
|
The site visuals accomplish exactly what they set forth to do.
Rainbowfish are of course very colorful fish, and the site plays off the
Rainbowfish name by creating different sections that are each highlighted with one color
of the rainbow. The effect allows you to always know where you are on the site while
keeping the site together and making it interesting while you tour the site. |
|
Overall (10) |
|
As mentioned before,
this site is easily one of the best, if not the best fish-related site on
the net. It sticks to its subject matter, and covers the topic better than any site
or book, or even combination of sites could do. My personal favorite on the site is
the "KANGAROO TOUR."
This feature of the site acts as a 'next' button that takes you page by page
through all the pages on the site. It begins with an introduction and brief history
of the Rainbowfish, and then moves to an explanation of Rainbowfish habitat, caring,
feeding, breeding and through all the different species of Rainbowfish. It even
contains a section of collecting and shipping Rainbowfish, though many of us may not ever
be able to experience that joy. The full tour, reading every word on every page,
takes several hours, and is perhaps advisable over a several day period.
With or without the tour, the Rainbowfish site is a wonderful site to
visit. If you've ever had any inclination to learn more about Rainbowfish, this is
the place to do it. Even if you haven't had much desire towards Rainbowfish, I
highly recommend this site. A visit will surely leave you entranced by the
fascinating world of one of the Aquarium hobby's most beautiful fish.
