January/February 2002 Site
of the Month: |
|
 |
|

Often when you are trying to find information on a specific type of fish, a
general site can give you good information, but the best information comes
from someone and/or some site that is specialized on that specific type of
fish. Loaches online is just such a place. It is a site that is
devoted entirely to loaches and botias.

Original Content (9) |
|
The
information here is all very original and interesting.
I don't think that
there is any other site on the web where all of this information is
available, and for the most part, the information available isn't available
anywhere else on the net. The content is light and enjoyable in parts,
and other areas are geared for more advanced aquarists. |

Value to the Hobby (9) |
|
Personally I put
the value high in the "what if this site didn't exist" category...I feel
that if the site didn't exist, anyone who got online would know a lot less
about Loaches. This site allows information to be collected together
about loa1ches in one local. Without it, I wouldn't be able to
identify my own loaches without buying books...and since we all know the web
is about learning without having to spend anything but ridiculous amounts of
time finding information, this is a big plus. |

Visuals (7) |
|
This
site was initially done in 1998. The visuals done that year include
many humorous drawings of loaches to accompany the first articles posted.
I loved all of the initial stuff and found the pictures to be wonderful.
The catalog of photos of the Loaches is also a highlight that will allow you
to visually try to identify your loach from the many entries there.
The actual site graphics and layout are alright. They are
useable enough but certainly could use a re-vamping as I don't believe
they've been modernized in the last few years.
(note: since
writing this article, I was written by someone who worked with the
site, and they agreed that some of the art could use updating, and
they in fact did so...I would increase my ranking of the visuals 1-2
points for the new visuals:) |

Overall (8) |
|
Whether you have
loaches, or would just like to keep loaches, this is a great site to visit.
I highly recommend the hill stream loach section as these are one of the
coolest looking fish in the hobby...and one of the most quickly killed in
the home aquarium due to the aquarium being unsuitable to keep them.
The layout for the site is easy to follow, and you'll easily find out
information that you cannot find anywhere else. |
