This category rates the overall ability of the pump.  This is not necessarily an average of the ratings, but an opinion of the overall ability of the pump, taking all factors into consideration.  A pump rated 5 is near perfect, a pump rated 1 is one you probably want to pass on.

 BUY!
One of the big drawbacks of pumps is the noise factor. If you’re funning the tank in your bedroom, a quieter pump may be better. If you are lucky enough to have a fish room, a nosier pump may be acceptable. A 5 is a very quiet pump, a 1 is a very noisy pump. How long will the pump last. Without fail, pumps slow down as the get older, but some are at a ripe old age after only a few months. How long can you expect the pump to be productive? A pump rated a 5 will last for many years, while a 1 might not complete a single year. How well does the pump push? Can you run multiple devices on it? How about in 30" deep tanks? A pump with a high rating in this category can get the job done.  A pump rated 5 in this category should be able to more devices at deeper depths.
